Events Organized:
- Holding a lecture or symposium on the theme of Peace for sustainable development; peace for nation building
- Organizing a Cultural manifestation that shows the diversity of cultures in St. Maarten / St. Martin
Collaborators: Rotary Clubs, UNDP, Department of the Interior and Kingdom Relations
The goal of the events was to promote peace and dialogue among the youth and the various culture / ethnic groups on the island.
The Peace Symposium that was held allowed the secondary students to dialogue and pose questions to the keynote speaker, Mr. Richard Blewitt, the UNDP Resident Representative in Trinidad and Tobago, and the local panelists. Whilst the Cultural Manifestation allowed the various culture / ethnic groups on the island to share their culture using the art forms of (dance, music, poetry), cultural wear, exhibition and demonstrations.
Organizing these activities, allowed the NATCOM to collaborate with the Rotary Clubs on the island, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), the Department for Interior and Kingdom Affairs, a number of culture / ethnic groups, and all secondary schools on St. Maarten.
The International Peace Day events ended with all participants holding hands around the newly constructed ‘Peace Monument’ built by the Rotary Clubs as a symbol and promise of peace and unity amongst us all.
