Organizational Structure of Sint Maarten National Commission for UNESCO

The Sint Maarten National Commission for UNESCO is part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs.  The secretariat is situated within the Support Bureau of this Ministry.  The secretariat of the Sint Maarten National Commission for UNESCO consists of one professional (Secretary General for UNESCO) and one support staff (secretary).

The secretariat is headed by the Secretary General for UNESCO.  The Secretary-General is responsible for the implementation of the Commission’s activities and the overall management of the Secretariat, while the secretary is responsible for the administrative duties.

In addition, workgroups or committee comprising of highly competent persons drawn from various governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as individuals in their personal capacity, whose expertise is critical to the successful implementation of the programmes and activities of UNESCO Members States/ Associate members, have also been established.  To date a Man and Biosphere committee and an Intangible Heritage committee have been formed.

The members of the workgroups or committees are recommended by the Secretary General for UNESCO and confirmed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs.  According to the ‘Landsbesluit regelende de instelling van de Nationale UNESCO Commissie Sint Maarten’, Article 5 # 1 a-d, the following workgroups can be established:

  1. Education workgroup;
  2. Culture workgroup;
  3. Science and Technology workgroup;
  4. Communication and Information.
