Inventorying St. Maarten’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Sint Maarten National Commission for UNESCO has begun the process of inventorying St. Maarten’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).  Members of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Committee, Clara Reyes and Marcellia Henry have started the process of visiting various groups in the community to discuss St. Maarten’s Cultural Heritage.  During these meetings / presentations, these groups are given the opportunity to review, edit, and add to the Draft Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory List that was compiled at the National ICH Consultation held on July 3-4, 2014.

To date the ICH Committee has meet with over seventy (70) senior citizens, students of the Charlotte Brookson Academy, the contestants of the upcoming Junior, Teen, Senior and Mature Carnival Queen Show, and students who participated in the workshop held at the St. Maarten Youth Desk.

The committee will be meeting with other groups / stakeholders in the community from January throughout May, 2015. In addition to the face to face meetings/presentations,  a survey and questionnaire will be developed to assist with the inventorying process, which will be distributed digitally and manually.  It is the intention that after the first inventorying phase, another National ICH Consultation will be held in September 2015 to review the data gathered and the updated ICH Inventory List.
