UNESCO PARTNERS WITH THE FORESEE FOUNDATION FOR THE SECOND PRODUCTION OF THE SOUALICHI STORIES SERIES

The Foresee (4C) Foundation Soualichi Stories series includes St. Martin’s most beloved legends as told by some brilliant St. Maarten storytellers.  The series was initiated during the COVID-19 period of social distancing in order to bring the St. Maarten community a sense of connection through their shared heritage and culture. The Soualichi Stories was introduced as a response to a needs assessment conducted by NPOwer, Foresee’s NGO platform, with several NGOs focusing on needs of seniors and schools. NPOwer received feedback on the need for health-related protection materials and finding ways to give encouragement to the elderly who were living in isolation, both in the White & Yellow Cross senior home and in their own living arrangements.

The purpose of the Soualichi Stories project is threefold:

  • To offer deeper connections, delight, enjoyment, recreation and relaxation to St. Maarteners during this extremely difficult time when it is healthiest for them and for us all to remain apart
  • To preserve, sustain, enrich and promote our local culture and heritage
  • To educate our community about St. Maarten folk history

The stories serve to educate youth and adults, and integrate timeless issues facing St. Maarten and the social ecosystem. In line with UNESCO’s program objectives, the Soualichi Stories series strives through these legends to develop a more connected Sint Maarten through our shared heritage, culture, history and folklore.

With the sponsorship from UNESCO, fifteen additional audio and video stories will be produced for distribution, along with curricular supplements and an online storybook compilation.
